The government will provide vehicles to all 225 parliamentarians for their use in the future, Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism Minister Vijitha Herath said.
Addressing a television programme last night, he explained that MPs will no longer be granted permits to import vehicles.
“However, whether the vehicle is used or brand new, every parliamentarian must receive vehicles of equal condition and model. If not, questions will arise afterward,” he said.
“We have a strict policy of providing either used or brand-new vehicles to MPs for the five-year government term, solely for their use,” the Minister said.
“There are two options for using the vehicles provided to MPs. One is to hand over the vehicles after the government term ends. The other is to pay the vehicle’s price to the government, based on depreciation, and keep the vehicle after the term,” Minister Vijitha Herath said.
