A protective embankment was constructed today (10) at the 15th milepost on the Ella-Wellawaya main road, where 15 persons were killed and 18 others injured in a tragic bus accident last week, Uva Province Governor’s Counsel, Attorney-at-Law Kapila Jayasekara said.
The accident occurred on the night of September 4 when a bus carrying Tangalle Urban Council employees and their families on a picnic plunged about 1,000 feet into a ravine.
Governor Jayasekara noted that several fatal accidents had occurred at this location in the past. The embankment was therefore built in collaboration with the Road Development Authority to minimize future road tragedies.
He further stated that following this accident, the Uva Provincial Road Safety Committee comprising 28 state institutions decided to implement similar safety measures at other identified dangerous locations in the district.
