The Election Commission (EC) has announced yesterday that the nominations for the 2025 Local Government Elections will be accepted from March 17 until 12.00 noon on March 20.
The EC Chairman stated that candidates are able to place their deposit bonds to contest in the Local Government Elections for 336 Local Government bodies from yesterday (03) until 12.00 noon on March 19, excluding weekends and Poya days.
All political parties and independent groups who are intending to contest in the upcoming LG polls are required to submit their nominations and place their deposit bonds during these periods.
Nominations are accepted for the LG Polls by the relevant District Returning Officers and Divisional Secretariats which will be conducted in 336 Local Government bodies excluding Kalmunai Municipal Council and Dehiattakandiya Pradeshiya Sabha in the Ampara District, Mannar Pradeshiya Sabha in the Mannar District, Punakari Pradeshiya Sabha in the Kilinochchi District and Elpitiya Pradeshiya Sabha in the Galle District.
LG Polls will be conducted for 28 Municipal Councils, 36 Urban Councils, and 272 Pradeshiya Sabhas to elect the Mayor, Deputy Mayor, Chairman, Deputy Chairman, and Members.
The LG Polls (Special Provisions) Bill was passed by a special majority in Parliament on February 17 after several clauses were amended in accordance with the Supreme Court’s opinion and the Government has already allocated the necessary funds for the holding of the polls.
