Sweeping changes will be introduced to the education system in 2026 under which a module system will be introduced instead of textbooks while there will be less classroom work, Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya told Parliament today.
Responding to a question raised by MP Ravindra Bandara in the House, the Prime Minister said there will be less emphasis on examinations while there will be more focus on practical work than classroom work under the new system.
“Stress which school children have to undergo presently will be done away with by these new methods,” the Prime Minister said.
“The number of subjects a child will have to study will also be changed,” the Premier added.
She said the focus will be on arts, IT and accounts under the new system of education.
Also, she said focus will also be turned towards increasing facilities in universities.
