Blaming the ruling National People’s Power (NPP) government for a sharp rise in criminal activity and institutional chaos, Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) Parliamentarian Namal Rajapaksa has raised alarm over what he described as a “complete breakdown” in the country’s law and order.
In a post on social media platform X, Rajapaksa drew attention to a series of troubling incidents that have unfolded across the island in recent months.
“There have been 50 daylight shootings since January,” the MP stated.
He questioned the government’s ability to maintain public safety under such circumstances.
Rajapaksa also highlighted a scandal involving the alleged release of 323 containers in January without proper inspection.
“These containers reportedly contained controversial items, and the government continues to deny accountability,” he said.
Adding to the controversy, Rajapaksa referenced the recent release of an inmate accused of financial fraud who was reportedly granted a presidential pardon during Vesak.
The Presidential Media Division (PMD), however, has since denied authorizing the release and announced that a CID investigation has been launched to determine how the inmate was freed.
“Does this mean that prison authorities acted independently?” Rajapaksa questioned.
Furthermore, he accused the NPP government of abandoning the principles of good governance and strong leadership it once championed. “The NPP, which protested at every juncture asking for good governance, has today, just six months on, lost its grip on the nation,” he said.
