There are Several Opposition members in Parliament yesterday voiced concern regarding the rising incidents of crime in the country.
SJB MP Dayasiri Jayasekera raised concern over the rise in crime and the absence of sufficient security in the country, bringing up the shooting incident of underworld leader Ganemulla Sanjeewa yesterday inside Court No. 5 of the Colombo Magistrate’s Court Complex where the shooter came inside the Court disguised as a lawyer and escaped after the shooting while also pointing out to the shooting incident in Middeniya on Tuesday (18) night which killed two victims including a child, stating that even lawyers are not safe to appear in Courts.
MP Jayasekara pointed out that over 78 shootings have been reported so far and urged the government and the Parliament to take serious consideration on the issue as killing has become a simple matter in the country.
Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa also commenting on the matter said the Opposition is prepared to extend its support to the government to curb criminal activities in the country and to ensure law and order are established, stating that a more stronger and firm solution must be taken to address this rise in daily crimes involving killings.
He said that presently, shootings have become a daily occurrence in Sri Lanka with innocent children also falling prey as victims and said that the nation has fallen into a state where the Courts have become highly unsafe to attend following yesterday’s shooting incident inside the Hulftsdorp Court Complex.
The Opposition Leader stressed that this was a serious concern and urged the government to take even more stringent measures in order to curb crime and requested the Chief Government Whip to make a special statement about the measures taken to address the issue.
